Child products + custom fields, with inventory

Hi.
I've just set up a new vm2 and j! 1.7.3 installation.
I see there are problems with child products.
I've not inserted any personal products, but I see from the sample date that something weird happens.
For example the ladder, that should have three child products, doesn't list anything instead. Is it intended to work in other ways than Vm 1.?
Are prices intended to be shown that way? Very bad impact, I hope there's something else that is going wrong here...

Child products must have a category

I see that giving a category to a product makes it appear in that category.
This is a good feature, but it's different from what we used to do with vm 1. It seems I'm missing how personalized fields work here. I would like to have something like variants of the same products, shown in a "base" product, select-able from it. Is there some guide written on how to use the personalized fields and child products?

---edit---
Just found out many hints / wikis, for others:

I still have to understand if we can use custom fields + child products to have inventory registration for each variant. Will investigate asap :)

---edit1---
Mmh, product fields are a nightmare for me. I can't understand how to simply have a list, radio buttons are always mis-placed, like the first radio button is on the "title" line, second is right after the first choose line, third on the second and so on. Very incomprehensible.
In the meantime, I've just found out http://dev.virtuemart.net/projects/virtuemart/wiki/Product_custom_fields_with_stock_control that is just what I wanted...

---edit2---
Ok, got something working, not everything. As you can see in custom_fields I've set VMCUSTOM_STOCKABLE_PRODUCT_MATERIAL and written the line in en-Gb and my language it-IT, the other 3 lists are all empty, both titles and chooses. Everything appears to be ok in product_custom_field file you can see below. This is about the parent product that has 4 childs (it had 3 before). It seemed very smart to just change values there choosing from that list but for some reason every time I choose different values and click on save...they just go back to Metal, all. The same happens clicking on save and close.
Also, I don't get what the first checkbox is for...

Hints about something I am missing here?
Could it be that the 3 (sample data) child products already have their prices? I never insert prices but putting "0" there didn't help. Also, is this a differential or a new fixed price? Oh, I even tried to add the forth product from there and it worked ok, but I still miss the ability to change any value.
p.s. when understood, this implementation is very cool and damn fast ;)

We have a bug there, I realized it one day after the release. The customfields are not correctly working with children and clones. We are going to fix this next release.

When you write a 0 price it gets overwritten, you should use no data in it, when you want to automatically use the price of the parent.

Don't know if this is intended to work this way, but putting in prices didn't modify any price of the already child-products (the 3 of the ladder in sample data), they stayed the same.
Can't tell about the fourth product that I have added from the plugin itself, it has no price written in, like in the plugin list!

I'm afraid the child product feature is not working right now. We will need to wait for the next bugfix release.

I want a early bug fix. I have stopped working on the new site and waiting for it.

Are there any news about this one? When will the bugfix be available?

Thanks.
