digital downloads, multiple files/formats

I am trying to set up a store and running into questions/problems.

First, the store will primarily be digital downloads of various types of 3D artwork.
I would like to allow someone who buys a file to be able to download it a set number of times (3) with no expiration date. Is this possible?

Also, most 'products' in the store will have multiple file types available.
I would prefer to be able to separate the purchase of each file type, but without having to create multiple products which are otherwise identical. i.e. have a single product image, a single product description, but an option list to select which file type to purchase, allowing them to buy each file type individually. I can see how to add an option that would allow such a selection - but how do I link each option to a separate download?

I do also have some other questions, but they are vastly different in scope, so I will start another thread for them.

The product download plugins are configurable, but this plugin  http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=103808.0  has more options than the standard plugin, http://extensions.virtuemart.net/extensions-virtuemart-2/shipment-for-virtual-products-detail
