How can I get cart totals without displaying Sales price?

The logic for displaying prices on VM 2 is really convoluted! There are way too many options and these options appear to be unnecessarily dependent on one another. For example, my store has no price variations. Yet if I only display the final salesprice there are no totals displayed in the shopping cart! The only way I can get a total price is by also displaying the salesprice without tax.  Price totals should be displayed UNCONDITIONALLY.
