Child Products seem to sort by Parent's Price

I just tried sorting by price on a top level category page (showing all products in shop). I sorted by lowest price, but one product at $30 shows up as the first product. next to it a $4 item. Now the peculiar thing about this product is that it is a child product for a stockable variant and it's parent product's price is zero. Could child products be sorted by its parent price? Is this a bug?
