How to disable the popup linked thumbnail on the product details page in v2.0.2?

Hi, upgraded to 2.0.2 yesterday and I've noticed a change to the product details page when no image is loaded in product configuration. In 2.0.0 it displayed just the noimage.gif. In 2.0.2 it displays noimage.gif and also a small thumnail of noimage.gif. This is hyperlinked and when you click on it a popup opens and displays noimage.gif.

Please can someone explain what this popup is for?

If I load an image in product configuration then I don't see a thumnail on the product details page. The thing is that I want to use a custom image instead of noimage.gif but I don't what the popup-able thumbnail on the product details page. Can this be disabled without a template override?
