Recurring payment as custom field

I have recently upgraded to joomla 3.9.0 and virtuemart 3.4.2 and noticed that it has recurring payment as custom field against product. How can this recurring payment is being used and what is it for?

Is it for auto delivery option where customer can pick so they can sent the product automatically? I tried to enable this field against a product but nothing changed when i clicked on the product page to see, does it need another plugin etc.?

Current Joomla release version is 3.9.28 and the latest VirtueMart is 3.8.9  - why "upgrade" to old versions.   http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=118683.0

I have never seen a "recurring payment" product custom field option  - it is an opinion in some payment systems.
