Emails not sending

Hi,
When I update order status I get this notice -

Notice
Could not start mail function.
Could not send a message to *****

It has been working fine for a few years and now suddenly doing this.
Joomla! 3.9.3    VirtueMart 3.4.2
Any ideas ?

tested Joomla email sending?

its a Joomla error

PHPMAILER_INSTANTIATE="Could not start mail function."

from the Mail library .. unlikely to be VM related

yeah I am starting to see that, I have changed it to SMTP and now getting a different notice!
I will ask on Joomla, thanks for your help

You only get the answer from your server support.
You can use php mail, linux mail(in this case you need the know the right path) or SMTP
