Adding additional product detail fields / custom fields to VM Administration

There are many threads on here that relate to creating and using custom fields on the frontend. However there is nothing really that helps us understand best practices for adding additional fields to the product details backend using plugins and without core hacks.

Currently I do this via template overrides in the standard Joomla 3 admin template "isis" for com_virtuemart. I create an additional tab layout, add the extra fields and store the additional data via AJAX. The problem is that I have to create the product first and then edit the newly created product to add the additional information, which is then stored in a seperate virtuemart_custom_extdata table using the product ID as primary key.

To my knowledge there is no VM API hook available to save the additional data as from a function when a new product is created (however I feel this would be a great feature). If anyone knows of any way this can be done and if there is something I have missed, I would really love to know...

Until then I will just need to work how I am working...
