Code for zip code field

Hello there.

I use vm 2.6.10 and joomla 2.5.x

I use zip code field to show/hide some shipment/payment methods. The problem is that i have imported zip codes without blanks or any symbol (i.e. 15344). Is there a way to somehow if the user inserts zip code like this ( 153 44 or 153-44) to automatically remove spaces or other symbols or to pop up something that it says the correct format?
