Problem Adding Product Color Options

Hello,

We've recently completed a migration from VM 1.x to 2.x to 3.x. as well as with Joomla.

I thought we were done but much to our dismay, the color options were lost along the way. I don't have much experience with VM but in VM 1.x, it appeared as if you simply needed to add the color attributes which was nice and straightforward.

I'm not certain, but in VM 2.x, but I believe the method was to add a Custom Field using 'Cart Variant'.

In VM 3, Cart Variant does not appear in Custom Field types and my developer said we now need to use Child Products which seems like a very clunky.

My questions are these:

1. Why wasn't this considered when developing new versions of VM so that color options were not lost? Color options is common and with hundreds of products, each has to be recreated manually.

2. Is there a way to upgrade without losing Color Options for Products?

3. Is there documentation for adding Color Option lists in VM 3.x?

4. When I tried to add a Child Product, our server threw a 500 Internal Server Error nginx/1.6.2 .

What was worse, is that after trying to add a Child Product, thousands of blank products with names like, :3654 :7675 etc. appeared. Any idea why this happening?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

VM2/3 is designed to be very flexible and cater for a wide range of needs including the stock control of a variant - as a result, some old functional aspects were not  part of that development.  However, the designers provided for plugin capability to allow third parties to develop solutions to further enhance the core functionality.

As a result this free plugin was designed to mimic the VM1 cart variant feature.

Quote2. Is there a way to upgrade without losing Color Options for Products?

Not that mimics the VM1 functionality

Quote3. Is there documentation for adding Color Option lists in VM 3.x?

If you don't need bells and whistles - the above plugin link gives you some guidance.

PLEASE NOTE - that their are additional cart variant plugins that provide enhanced levels of customer display than the one I have linked to.

You can search the forum - 3rd party plugins OR go to the VM extensions page

Hello, thanks for your reply.

We tried installing the module and received an error message saying XML file not found.

Any idea what would cause that error?

Thanks
