No "Cart Variant" option

I am trying to create a Custom Field for my products. I have read NUMEROUS threads about how to do it and ALL of them say to click NEW and then in the Custom Field Type, select "Cart Variant".  HOWEVER, I don't even have that option in the list. 

Here are the options I see:

Time
Image
COM_VIRTUEMART_CUSTOM_BOOLEAN
Custom Group
Generic Child Variant
Editor
Text Area
Plugins
COM_VIRTUEMART_RELATED_PRODUCTS
COM_VIRTUEMART_RELATED_CATEGORY

What in the world is going on?  Any suggestions out there?  Any help is GREATLY appreciated...

What VM version? The pic is from VM2.6.7

You also seem to have problems with language files.

administrator/components/com_virtuemart/version.php says I am using 2.9.8

this is the test version of VM3.0 (soon to be released) - there is no cart variant

but the easiest why to see how these work is to install (some where else obviosly) and install the test products - there there is examples of every custom field and usage with children etc - it is a lot simpler than the old custom fields
