How do you make parent unorderable when it has stockable children?

Hi all, I am at the end of my tether with this problem, and no matter what I search for in Google or how many forum posts I sift through, I just can't find the answer. I helped set up a website for Yoga clothing called flipyourdog.co.nz, and added products with child products for size variation. The size is running Joomla! 2.5.14 and Virtuemart 2.0.22 at the moment.

Currently, if I set a parent product to have 0 stock, while the child products have stock, I simultaniously get a add to card and a notify button. How do I make it so parent products aren't orderable? The only thing people should be able to order are the child products.

Thanks for your help.

I have the same problem. When I delete the 0 and save, the 0 appears again.

My parent is not orderable but I see a "Notify me" for the parent, even tough in the BE is set to "Parent orderabe [not selected]"

How do I get rid of that "Notify me" for a product that is not orderable? Thanks

Some time ago I did something like this for a clothing website. The parent isn't orderable, but the child products are.
In order to achieve this, I gave the parent a name without color, like 'shirt', and gave the child products names like 'shirt-red', 'shirt-blue', etc.

In custom fields I made a 'generic child variant' and named this 'color'.
Settings: published, no parent selected, cart attribute, layout position 'ontop', admin only 'no', list 'no', hidden 'no'.

In product-tab custom fields I chose the field 'color', set 'display parent as option' to 'yes' and left 'parent orderable' unchecked.

Okay, this was in a slightly older version of VM (2.0.18a), but it probably still works.

I have the same problem. I have a parent product, with child products. The child products are set up as above, as colour variants. The parent is set so it cannot be selected, however this means that in the quick view and when you first view the product, it shows as out of stock, until you select a variable. SO it looks at first appearance as if everything is out of stock.

Any ideas?

Thanks. :-)
