Best way to approach selling rockets with 8 options while keeping stock.

In inventory I have about 50 body styles and each one has about 8-12 different engine variants. I've set the different engines up as "Child Products".
I've tried the "Generic Child Variant" method as well as the "Stockable Variants" plugin.

When you select the main rocket body and then select the engine, the ONLY THING ADDED TO THE CART IS THE VARIANT.  Upon checking out THE ONLY STOCK REMOVED IS OF THE ENGINE. The body's(Parent Product) stock remains the same.

It seems that unless you are selling clothing, you're kinda SOL.

Hi

Try using the stockable variant custom field to your parent product.

It that the same as the stockable variants plugin? I've already tried that. The parent product does not display on the order nor does it deduct stock for it.

Actually i think that the parent plays the role of a pattern.

E.g.
Parent: Car
Child1: BMW, black,316
Child2: Toyota, blue, auris

So its normal that only the child product's stock is deducted

I don't think that there is another built in solution in VM, for having attributes and stock control

What if there are dealer installed options?

Parent: BMW, black,316
Child1: Chrome RIMs
Child2: Snow Tires
Child3: Tow Hitch

The dealer would still want to know how many chrome rims, snowtire sets, and tow hitches he has left in inventory, and also the MOST IMPORTANT thing, is to no allow someone to purchase child products that he doesn't have in stock.

Interesting issue.

Could you post link to a product page where you'd made an attempt to try out Balai's recommendation?

Just to understand what you want more clearly.

Sure, but it's really simple to understand I have product that has to be sold with one of several sub-products. All while keeping inventory on the main, and sub products. For example, You sell a rocket, but the rocket can come with several different engine types. I don't want people ordering a rocket with an engine that has run out of stock. Let them choose from engines that ARE in stock.

I have another site with the same issue. Selling a ticket to a conference(limited to 600 stock(tickets)), where they have to choose from a list of sub-conferences with limited seating(stock).

Here is one of the carts having the issue:
http://cdev.com.mx/index.php/costos/conferencia-nov-30-horario-a-1-detail

You add the conference product with the child variant to the cart and only the variant shows up and gets it's stock deducted on purchase.

I'll discuss conference case cos it's more simply for me to see.

Could you name first option in dropdown as 'Conferencia Nov-30 Horario A + Mesa 1'?
