Product Status and In Stock

I have Joomla 2.5.8 and using the latest version of VM2 2.0.22.  I have had some orders lately and noticed that when a product is ordered it doesn't seem to update the In Stock number on the Product Status tab.  Is this something you are supposed to do manually or is my store not working properly?
