Adding Custom Fields To Sort By List On Category Page

I can normally find everything I need to know with enough searching on this forum. However this is a problem I just can not seem to find anyone else who has resolved. Hoping I am just overlooking something obvious. What I am trying to achieve is a category product list with the ability to sort by custom fields instead of the default sort by options in virtuemart. Is this something that is possible? Any help is greatly appreciated.
