Can I change the length of the field product_desc without problems?

I need increase the length of the field "product_desc"
Any problem in the future (vm2 updates) if I change the length of this field?

Field: product_desc
Table: virtuemart_products_es_es
Type:varchar(18500)

OK, I have changed the field to type TEXT, to allow greater length, but i have a new problem:

When I  made changes in the configuration of Virtuemart, for example enable or disable the  VirtueMart CSS, always is altered the table to the original structure.
Is it possible to prevent this change?
