What is synchronize media synching?

Everyone seems to understand this but me... what is being synched in VM2 SHOP -> Media Files -> Synchronize Media to VirtueMart? AFAIK I've not designated a local directory that it would synch TO...

I do get the ""Found prior migration..." message that many have questioned, so I know SOMETHING is happening. ;-)
