How do I adjust my thumbnail pic to accept a different size pic w/out...

How do I adjust my layout or thumbnail pic to accept a different size pic w/out screwing up the layout?  My product images that I'm adding are 800x533 pixels.  When added, the thumbnails are resized to fit the default width, but the pricing, title etc. are screwed up.  I'm a beginner with css/php, so please help.  Thanks in advance!
