Online shoe shop

I need to advise my client who wants to establish an online shoe shop if Virtuemart/Joomla is the way to go. From what I can see the stock control is at best flaky.....if it's not would someone please point me in the direction of an FAQ that explains how this works.

Basically my customers needs to add a shoe, in different sizes and track stock in the various sizes.

Any and all help appreciated please.
