Payment plugin issue

Hi, I am not an expert in programming but I just wanted to know if I am using  a local payment gateway currently which was for virtuemart 1.xx, could the existing code be modified to fit in virtuemart 2.xx? Or I just have to wait for the guys here(the local payment gateway company) to develop the plugin?
In the event that if they don't or who knows how long is gonna take them to come out with the plugin, does it mean that I might just have to forgo virtuemart as my preferred shopping cart in the future? I been using virtuemart all along and really just hate to do that....
