Pagination issue

We seem to have an issue when there are multiple pages for certain categories.

If a user selects a category with pagination, moves to a second or third page and then jumps to a category with only one page of links, the system seems to try to display a "phantom" second page, with the result that no products are displayed.  This can only be circumvented by selecting another category with multiple pages, selecting the first page and then returning to the single page category.
