Shipping module suddenly stopped working...

in debug  mode we're getting this:

Debug: Starting Shipping module: ups
Debug: Using the cURL library for communicating with www.ups.com
Error: couldn't connect to host
Error: Internal Error processing the Request to UPS.com
Debug: The Shipping Module 'standard_shipping' couldn't
find a Shipping Rate that matches the current Checkout configuration:

Weight: 25
Country: USA
ZIP: 90042

so its not getting to step 2, and our store is now broken
we didn't change anything it just stopped working.
others seem to be having this sudden problem out of the blue as well
but I havn't found a solution yet...

I can't even get the Standard Shipping Module to show up.
It's enabled and everything. When I click on configure, it takes me to my custom shipper i made, but there's no option to select.

Does anyone have a answer to this?
