SSL Certificate

I am new to VirtueMart but familiar with Joomla. I have been researching on this forum and could not find this answer.  I am setting up my website using a hosting company that has all the requirements from VirtueMart but I am not sure if I need to have a dedicated SSL Certificate on my server. I am using Authorize.net.  Do I need the SSL Certificate on my server or does VM use Authorize.net SSL?? I want to make sure I have the proper hosting account before i purchase.
