Using multiple shipping modules, or combining multiple shipping modules

Here is my dilemma:

I have many items that can be determined by the UPS module and have weight and dimensions figured in for the price.

I also have many items that I have a specific shipping price for. (Standard shipping module.  I do this buy setting a specific weight and adding a price to that weight)

For instance, we sell batteries and other small items.  These items are sold by weight.  We also sell costumes.  These have a set price.  If I buy only batteries, everything is fine.  If I buy only a costume, everything is fine as well.  If I buy both however, I get either the option to buy the costume shipping price (more expensive) or the UPS price for the batteries.

My customers are obviously going to go for the least expensive option, when it should be the combined total of both shipping modules.

Is this possible to do?  Is there a better way to go about doing this?

Hey, I know this doesn't directly answer your question but I just discovered that purolator has recently put out a new shipping module, if you wanted to take a look at it heres the link: https://eship.purolator.com/site/
haven't used it myself but do a little research on it if you like, might help you out?
