Multi variants in Joomla 4

I have followed the procedure as per Virtuemart 3 to set up a Multi Variants Custom Field for colour and size variants. I created the children for the parent item with all colour and size variant options. I am running Joomla 4.2.7 and Virtuemart 4.0.12

On the Front end however it only displays the drop downs for the variants but only the default variants for the parent item and none of the children.

When I set the child item as published it displays the child next to the parent and again only the default options for the variants.

I need to set up the shop as a clothing store therefor I must cater for different Colours, Sizes and In Stock variants per product.
