New installation or a VM update? Nobody else has reported that error.
Do a re-install, simply by dragging & dropping com_virtuemart.3.8.8.10472_package_or_extract.zip into the Joomla Extensions/Install panel. No need to uninstall first.

Then you have an installation error. Assuming it was not a commercial quickstart package -  re-install as above.

Patrick, except for:

INSERT INTO `#__virtuemart_adminmenuentries` (`id`, `module_id`, `parent_id`, `name`, `link`, `depends`, `icon_class`,`uikit_icon`, `ordering`, `published`, `tooltip`, `view`, `task`) VALUES
(null , 1, 0, 'COM_VIRTUEMART_CATEGORY_S', '', '', 'vmicon vmicon-16-folder_camera', 'category', 1, 1, '', 'category', ''),

in install_essential_data.sql

I don't know what it is used for, though.
