Upgrade to 3.6.10 causing fatal error in Joomla front end

Hi

I am reinstating this Joomla + Virtuemart site on a different server to the original one.

Restored from backup and everything working OK. As soon as I upgrade Virtuemart to latest version, the front end site goes down and also most of Joomla admin. I can access some parts of admin but not the control panel nor the extensions manager.

The error I get is:
This page isn't workingfinelightimages.co.uk is currently unable to handle this request.
HTTP ERROR 500

Oddly enough, I can access Virtuemart and that seems to be working though haven't explored it too deeply.

I ran Joomla FPA on this site and it's showing this error:

Try PHP7.3  - the next version should be fully PHP7.4 compatible.

I had already tried reverting to PHP 7.2 after the site broke, but it didn't help.

Do I need to revert before the upgrade?

It was Joomla that was broken by the upgrade more than VM.
