Free product with minimum purchase

Looking through the forum I have seen this asked a few times, but not found a solution.

I need to add a free (bonus) product with minimum purchase.
Ideally this free product would be listed on the invoice / cart

any assistance would be greatly appreciated

The only way may be to make a separate 'product' that already comprises both the paid-for and free item.

I do not think that is the only way. Your suggestion does not take care of stock. Awocoupon does. I think there is a product builder that could make something similar, but I have never tested solution.
