SSL pages lose page elements

I'm using VM 2.6.6. Before I made the site multilingual all my pages rendered fine (and I used SEF links).

While making the site multilingual I ran into SEF problems and turned it off. I'm not using any 3rd party SEF plugins.

I don't know if that is a cause of the following problem, but doing QA I see that all my SSL pages now display without any modules (except, for some reason, the currency converter) - all menus and other modules are stripped off. The common denominator is that those page URLs and any subsequent pages they link to are all missing the "itemid" in the URL.

What can I do to fix that?
