great recommendation!  and who said that? Magento?

Your question is the same as asking your Ford dealer to help you buy a Toyota..  ;)

If you really feel it is worth the time, cost and effort then ask the Magento people how to migrate or use http://www.shopping-cart-migration.com . Mag is a much bigger package than VM, is a lot slower, requires a lot more server resources (preferably dedicated), and even for a skilled developer can take a very long time to set up and style. Having built a Mag site for a client once, I would never use it again. That client is now back on VirtueMart.

The future of Magento is in doubt as eBay have laid off some Magento staff and are trying hard to sell it off.  http://recode.net/2014/06/26/ebays-magento-to-shut-down-small-business-e-commerce-product/

In your case, if you don't have much technical knowledge, the best solution is shopping cart migration tools. They are available now but from my experience, VirtueMart to Magento Migration Tool of Litextension is really realibale and effective. It supports to convert all your database from one store on VirtueMart to another one on Magento quickly, just in some clicks. Try it if you'd like to give it a thought. Hope this helps
By the way, you could directly enter this link to know more about that porduct I've mention above: http://litextension.com/shopping-cart-migration/virtuemart-to-magento.html
