VM Links give 404 error (but not when site is offline)

I have set up a new site with VirtueMart 3.0.8. I did this all whilst offline and logged in as admin, everything worked fine (even when logged in as manager etc) when I made the site live all VM links (apart from the shop itself) went dead giving 404 error (coincidentally a 404 screen I hadn't seen before so I assume it is virtuemarts custom) also a vmproduct module showing the latest products stopped working too (no images and dead links)

Any ideas whats going on?

Im sure it's not a conflict as it was working perfectly and I can get it back by taking the site offline?!
