Custom "date" field, left empty, is displaying today's date. Can I change that?

I have bunch of products that include multiple custom fields such as "Expiry Date" and "Creation Date". They are just for informative purposes and do not affect the purchase of a product.

When one of these fields is present in product, but left empty ("-never-" is displayed in the back-end of the product custom fields list), the front-end product description page is should "Expiry Date: 4th February, 2015" (today's date).

Is there way to change this behaviour so that the field is either completely hidden if there is no valid data in it, or at least prevent it from showing today's date and just display no value at all for this field?
