Translate Custom Fields w/images

I have successfully implemented this solution to translate custom fields:

However, in addition to the text in my fields, I also have an image that is associated with it - one for each language (English, German and Italian).  Any ideas on a strategy to also have a translated custom field pick a specific image depending on the language?  My custom field type is "Image".  I have tried to upload the 3 versions of the image to the Media Files and then selected the appropriate language for each upload.  Then add all three images to the product in the custom fields section.  However, it doesn't seem to make any difference and shows all 3 entries regardless of the language.
