Inventory Management at Child Product Level

Is it possible to control inventory at the child product level?

How does inventory work on a variant level such as the following:

Jacket Red

Size L
Size XL
Size 2XL
Size 3XL

Let's say the SKU for "Size 2XL" is running low, will that make that SKU unavailable for ordering but let the remaining SKUs be ordered in the drop down menu?

Does anyone have experience with this??

The bad news in my experience the stock control for child stockable variants is broken-ish in 2.6.x and less - happy to be proved wrong

I have always found to get the children to appear you need to give the parent stock (even if it isn't for purchase)
The stock of the parent has to be equal to the highest stock of a child as the add to cart only seems to check the parent stock intially
In the product page you can add to cart any child amount up to the parents stock level - even if the child stock is less
Only when you get to the cart is the "over order" acknowledged and your told to reduce the number

VM2.9.9 handles this so much better with the generic custom fields

But just set up a quick experiment - takes 10 mins
