Exactly what files are synchronized in Synchronize Media to Virtuemart

I am using VM 2.6.6 in Joomla 2.5 and am having an impossible time synchronizing my files to Virtuemart.  When I try synchronise I keep getting 500 error.  My webmaster says it's because I'm trying to synch too many files.  I figure I should be synching 6000 files and he says it's trying to synch over 11,000 files.  He says I need to increase my host execution time but that would cost me 5 times more so that's not an option.  I think it might be trying to synch backups or other duplicates so I need to know exactly which files are being synched and how to change it.  Can anyone help me, please.
