Sorting of products don't work for categories

When I choose a category for products in Virtuemart administration and then try to sort the products with the sorting numbers and save they revert back to the numbers they previously had. I have read similar threads about this but didn't find a solution.

It's very important for my customer to be able to sort the products the way she likes.

You should update your VirtueMart.  http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=118683

In current versions product ordering is by drag and drop and works well.
