Win-Win suggestion

Just more than a year ago I built my first website with virtuemart and am still administrator of it. Currently the joomla version of the site is 2.5.17 and Virtuemart 2.0.26D. In  the coming months I like to upgrade this site to Joomla 3 with VM 2.1. I like to ask who can give me a plan of approach/work instruction or such how I can accomplich this without beginning from scratch. With over 700 products that is not an option. Mr. Jenkins asks for testers, well, here I am. When I know how to upgrade I automatically will test VM2.1

Make a backup, install vm2.1 over it and start to test. But atm vm2.1 is more a playground. It is NOT for productive use yet!
