Problem with URLs and Search

On our site http://www.mardens.co.uk we have the product search on all pages; when you search for a product from any page other than 'Online Store' the results are returned on a page with 'component/virtuemart' in the URL. This means that the side bars which should show on every page are not displayed! However, if you first go to the 'Online Store' and then search the results page has the 'component/virtuemart' part of the URL replaced with 'online-store' so the side bars display as they should.

A similar glitch appears when accessing a category from the Home page rather than the Online Store page even though both of them are Virtuemart Front Pages!!

This issues also seems to be causing the site to hang in IE 8 when you try to select a category from the home page
