Avalara Tax Plugin and Shipping

First, I'm relatively new to VirtueMart.
I'm using:

VM 2.0.24c / Joomla 2.5.16
Avalara tax plugin : 2.0.18b
Using the paid VM USPS Shipping plugin by alatak, version 1.32

I'm having trouble finding documentation on how to set up the tax for shipping. The plugin documentation contains a handy example for setting up an exemption for non-taxable categories, and I've done exactly that. The site is for a tea shop, and most of the products are not taxable, but some are. When they are, the shipping is also taxable.

Currently, my invoices show tax on shipping for all in-state orders, rather than just those that contain taxable products.

Avalara provides a tax code for freight (FR), but it is unclear to me how this is configured within VM, since shipping doesn't seem to have it's own SKU, and the documentation indicates a procedure using the SKU fields for item codes or categories for tax codes.

Any idea how I can get shipping to be taxed properly? Thanks!

thank you Jennifer,
Matt, <ou can also just use http://www.avalara.com/ and at the top are various methods to contact the support, via form, chat, or phone. They will help you with your issues. The shipment of VM has a SKU for avatax. The simpelst way is to create a sample invoice and to see which SKU is used.
Should I fix your bug, please support the VirtueMart project and become a member

Thanks! My tech email to Avalara had gone unanswered, but I hadn't taken the time to call yet. Looks like I have some options... thanks again.
