Custom fields for child products Do not clone

i am having this problem and have searched everywhere, i am using 2.0.24


When i create a child product, I can't get the custom filed values to clone. For example Size. i have s, m, l, xl. but for xl the product is $5 more. when i create the child product the custom fields do clone but they are empty. How do i get them to clone exactly and eel the field names.
