Population of Child Fields with Parent [and grandparent] data

Hello,  we have installed the stockable plugin and so far things seem to be configured ok,  We have one model of shoe [grandparent - unpublished] which we have created 20 children [one for each color- all published] and then for each color we have created a custom field using the plugin for shoe size and thus a number of grandchildren products one for each size of that color.  All is working on site thus far, but when we started working to set up shipping, we discovered that we could not simply enter shipping data [dimensions & weight] into the grandparent like we have been able to do for product descriptions, price, etc.  When the shipping component looks to calculate shipping cost it comes back with zero weight as if the data from the grandparent is not being sent to the grandchildren.  Price and product description are sent, however.  Does anyone know why this is occurring with dimensions and weight?  And what the solution would be?  It kind of defeats the purpose of the parent - child relationship if we are forced to enter the same repeat data into a large number of children... that's what the parent is for.  Any insight or solutions appreciated!
