All I did was install com_virtuemart.2.0.22a.tar.gz and com_virtuemart.2.0.22a_ext_aio.tar on top of version 2.018  using the normal Joomla install procedure.
I have Joomla 2.5.11
PHP Version 5.3.3
Linux 2.6.32-042
In Joomla I have the following  SEO Settings
Search Engine Friendly URLs   = Yes
Use URL rewriting = Yes
Adds Suffix to URL = Yes

Also, ver 2.0.20a works for me.

How to I check to see if urls have changed?

Probably you could remember what was typical url to your category in general before update.

Your .htaccess file in your web site root has right content?

Not sure, the .htaccess  did not change since version 2.0.20b
What must I look for in .htaccess ?

be careful doing htaccess things if you do not know much about it.

do you have "akeebah admin tools"?

I use their htaccess maker

Looking at this problem from a macro point of view I note the following:
versions before 2.0.21x work on my website.
Versions 2.0.21x and 2.0.22x  have problem as described.
So, giving that I have made no changes to my Joomal/php/mysql I have to ask what has changed in version 2.0.21 +
Is there some new requirement that has not been met?
Is there a bug in my Joomla setup that the old versions is immune to?
Is there a list of changes that I can look at?

I cleaned product URL in "B &W Print 12 x 8" product. And cleaned web site cache.
As far as I know there is no need to use product URL in most cases.
