Cookie for custom field

Hi! i need yours help!

I create a custom field for registration form, i need put in the value a value from a cookie that i created in other part of the joomla website, How do i do this? I put in the value field this: <?php echo $_COOKIE['cookiename']; ?>, $_COOKIE['cookiename'];... but nothing... Can anyone help me!!!
