Update errors and shipping/payment ssl?

Hi

Have been looking around 2 days to find answers... can anyone point me to right place or answer

I have two main problems after updating joomla to 2.5.11

1. My shop shipping and payment methods directing registered client to browser security alert page. Is it some SSL issue, and if where to look?
Edit: 1st question-solved. Enable sensitive areas SSL was ON. Sorry, I didnt find it out first.

But what about updates?-

2. when purge cache and tring find updates via joomla extension manager, this comes up

        Update: :Collection: Could not open http://update.joomla.org/jed/list.xml
        Update: :Extension: Could not open http://gruz.org.ua/images/stories/files/virtuemart_languages/update_et_ee.xml
        Update: :Extension: Could not open http://gruz.org.ua/images/stories/files/virtuemart_languages/update_ru_ru.xml

Dont know are all these related or not, so I placed them together here.

Adding that in database configuration.php all time wants to go unwritable, fixing it with admin tools extension to writable is not helping to solve those questions. 
Update VM plugin tables gives:


        com_virtuemart_allinoneInstallerScript:: VirtueMart2 update #__virtuemart_payment_plg_standard
        com_virtuemart_allinoneInstallerScript:: VirtueMart2 update #__virtuemart_shipment_plg_weight_countries
        Database updated

Database table structure is up to date.

Maybe needed to mention, that I also downloaded JTouch for mobile but its disabled now. Somenthing from there?

eXtplorer also seems to be broken, shows different errors.

I think all this is something to do with SSL settings somewhere on PHP settings, but what and where?

I'm running 2.5.11 on two sites now wioth VM2.0.20b and there are no problems.

The unable to update error is from Joomla, not VirtueMart. Maybe the update servers were unavalable?  Joomla's configuration.php is supposed to be set to 444
