"Qty" and "Add to Cart" dissappear depending on custom field

When I use a child variant custom field for Small, Medium, Large child products my "qty" and "+" (for add to cart) show up  for all products except the parent product, why is that?

Also, I tried making it a custom cart variant field so that I can control the order of the drop down and the "qty" and "+" do not appear at all !! They also do not appear when I tried toi make it a text field.

the "qty" and "=" show up fine on stand alone products.

i am using the Metro template from Virtuemart.net with joomla 2.5 and virtuemart 2.0

"Add to Cart" will not appear if there is no price inputted, that solve my problem...sigh
