Product Search Module

When using the default VM product search module for any product word, the results page opens with the display of the product(s) and at the top is what i believe is an advanced search option.
There are the words "Choose Product Type" and a drop down box with "Select".  Clicking on the drop down has nothing but "Select" listed.
How do I get some types to be listed in the drop down?
