The amount field in product detail page

Can I remove the amount field in the product detailed page, in any easy manner? Or do I need to alter the template?

YOu mean the quantity box ?

Yes, the quantity box... I want only one item to be sent to the cart, and there the customer can change the quantity to see the correct discounts etc.

The reason for this is that the prices and discounts does not change in the product details when the user changes the quantity. If it were ajax (or something likewise) controlled, to change as soon as the customer changes quantity, this hadn't been an issue...
