Should you migrate to 2.0?

1st, please note. 1.1 to 2.0 is a MIGRATION, not an upgrade!!!!

Just like going from Joomla 1.0 to 1.5, or 1.5 to 1.7, its a completely new system.

Do not migrate a live site
http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=95513.0

1.1 Add Ons, Plugins, Modules, etc. do NOT work with 2.0

What does this mean?
This means, you will not be able to migrate and automatically have the same functionality.

Can My Site have the same functionality?
In Most cases YES!
Virtuemart 2.0 actually has much more functionality than 1.1. The custom fields are completely different than 1.1.
Plugins can do many more things in 2.0
2.0 Uses "views" instead of "themes"

Will More Plugins Be Available
Of course, there will be many more payment, shipping, custom field plugins developed.

Will They all be in the core?
No,
They will not all be in the core.

Will They all be FREE?
No, they all will not be free.
There will be many plugins, modules, etc. That are free.
There will also be 3rd party modules, plugins, etc. that will be commercial.

What does all this mean?
Should i migrate to 2.0?

If you have a live working shop, that's making sales. You REALLY, should research and see what's going to be needed for you to have the same functionality.

What If I started a shop with 1.1 thats not finished, or not making sales yet.
You should migrate to 2.0 the next generation of Virtuemart

All brand new shops should start with 2.0
Joomla 1.5 is End of Life Next Month.

I have a large shop or a shop that's making sales. What do I do?
You do not migrate a live site 1st.
You backup your site, and install it locally, or on a test domain.
You migrate it
You find things that are going to have to be converted manually to the new system.
You fix these things.
You Test, Test, and Test.
You add functionality that's available in 2.0 that was not in 1.1
Then you launch your next generation o0f Virtuemart site.
