Parent Product in MultiVariants gets displayed in Dropdown when not published

The parent product -i.e. the custom label selected - of multivariants is not published in our setup. Still, in the dropdown for the variants the "Bitte wählen" / "Please select" of the parent product is shown. When customers click on it the site shows an error - obviously, since the product is not published.

This behaviour is quite new, it was not existing a few upgrades ago.

We are using VirtueMart 3.4.5 10054

Here is the screenshot of one parent product where the parent itself is shown greyed - not published and the labels are not selected "bitte wählen".
This Variant should never appear in the drop down box.

the problem here is not just cosmetical - of course the site shows an error when a customer clicks on the variant which is not published
