Using displayMediaThumb in custom module

Hi There I hope this is in the correct area of the Forum,

I need to apply the displayMediaThumb function when returnin a set of products from my custom coded AJAX search. I currently only fetches images from hardcoded URLS but I need to run the imgpath thru the displayMediaThumb() function in in order to generate the coffect thumbs.

I have a custom script in the Root of my project that was build independently of VM - Can anyone tell me what includes I need at the start of this file in order to be able to access the functionality of displayMediaThumb()?
